Dunes Golf & Beach Club9000 North Ocean Boulevard, Myrtle Beach, SC, 29572
The Dunes Golf and Beach Club, located in the heart of Myrtle Beach, is one of the Grand Strand’s most storied places for a round of golf. For well over half a century, it has served as a great escape for countless thousands of members and visitors.
Opened in 1948, The Dunes, as it is widely known, was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. it has hosted a number of golf tournaments of the highest caliber, from the U.S. Women’s Open in the 1960s to PGA Tour Qualifying in the 1970s to the Senior TOUR Championship in the 1990s. And in June 2014, the course will be the main host of the PGA Professional National Championship, which brings 312 of the best-playing club pros to Myrtle Beach for the first time. The top 20 finishers in the event will earn spots in the 2014 PGA Championship in August, to be held at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky.
The Dunes is a spectacular specimen of golf course architecture from the middle 20th century, with long fairways that march down treelined alleys toward elevated greens flanked by imposing bunkers. It is an excellent test of ball-striking in particular, and it throws interesting decisions the golfer’s way over the course of a round. Perhaps the most interesting of these comes at the par-five fourth hole, a reachable par five where a pond guards the front of the green and must be negotiated. The decision facing the player is whether to challenge the pond or to lay up for a wedge third shot to the elusive putting surface.
In summer 2013, the course underwent a renovation project centered around the installation of new Champion Bermuda greens.
