The Love Course at Barefoot Resort, located in North Myrtle Beach, was designed by Davis Love III, who is known more as an excellent player than designer of golf courses, but has been in the latter business since designing his first golf course, Ocean Creek on Fripp Island in South Carolina, in 1995—two years before his lone major championship victory at the 1997 PGA Championship at Winged Foot Country Club in New York.
In total, Love has been involved in the design of more than a dozen courses in the United States, with particular standouts at Kinderlou Forest in southern Georgia, site of a Web.com Tour event and the Retreat Course at Sea Island Resort.
At Barefoot Resort, Love applied the restraint and respect for golf’s heritage that marks his other designs. The golf course is simultaneously low-key and fun, with a simulated ruins of a plantation house positioned between the greens of the drivable par four fourth hole and the intriguing par four sixth. Later on, Love presents a risk-reward par five at the 13th, where players can hit to left- or right-hand fairways, depending on factors such as the day’s winds, shot shape and pin position. It is not enough to merely attack the Love Course—players must think their way around in order to have success.
