Long Bay Club350 Fox Tail Dr, Longs, SC, 29568
Located along Highway 9 in Longs and open since 1988, Long Bay Golf Club is one of only two Jack Nicklaus Signature golf courses in the Myrtle Beach area (the other being Pawleys Plantation in Pawleys Island). A true example of the Golden Bear’s design talent and flair, it is known as one of the Grand Strand’s most memorable and popular golf courses, gaining a following consisting of local members who live on and near the course and visitors who return year after year to play.
The course features an excellent mix of shot demands, with particularly emphasis placed on distance control with one’s irons and wedges. A number of the greens play relatively shallow and are elevated, meaning that shots hit a few yards long or short of the hole may find unpleasant lies. At the par four third hole, a bunker protects the entire front of the green while a collection area and another bunker lurk at the back, forcing players to be precise with their club and shot selection for the approach.
That said, there are holes that allow players to be craftier with the way they play, as Nicklaus gives intriguing options at times. On the short par five 15th, a good tee ball often means a short enough second shot to go for the green. But, the putting surface is well-protected: by water on the right and bunkers to the left. It is possible to bounce a ball onto the green from short and left, but there is a substantial risk to be considered. This and other holes infuse a sense of adventure, rather than pure struggle, into a round at Long Bay.
