Eagle Nest3820 Fairway Dr., Little River, SC, 29566
Designed by prolific Carolinas golf course architect Gene Hamm, Eagle Nest Golf Club is a longtime favorite of Grand Strand golfers. The North Myrtle Beach layout, which opened in 1971, features rolling hills and generous landing areas, finishing with three holes requiring approaches over water.
Boosted by two long holes in the final trio, par-72 Eagle Nest stretches out to 6,901 yards from the back tees with a course rating of 73.0 and a slope rating of 126. The Bermuda greens offer consistent putting surfaces with subtle undulations. Mature pines and oaks – but no homes – line the fairways. Water can come into play on 10 holes, though ample bailout room exists on most shots.
The short par-5 first hole opens a comfortable three-hole start that allows players to settle in and gain confidence. The back nine begins with a similar stretch of three, short, forgiving holes then begins building toward the climax, often made tougher by tricky breezes.
The par-4 16th extends to 449 yards with a lake cutting in front of the left side of the green to grab what can be long approaches. The 616-yard 17th is a par-5 requiring three solid shots, the final over water to the green. Water cuts across the fairway making an attempt to get close to the putting surface in two shots impossible for all but the longest hitters. The par-3 18th stretches to 185 yards, most of the distance over water, to a green protected by bunkers and exposed to the wind.
