Burning Ridge Golf Club, a Gene Hamm design opened in 1980, offers an eclectic variety of greens that provide a special feel to a traditional beach-style layout. Located near Coastal Carolina University west of Myrtle Beach, the golf course is a versatile layout that has hosted prestigious tournaments, but maintained a comfortable playability for higher handicappers.
Measuring 6,780 yards from the back tees, Burning Ridge carries a 73.9 course rating and a 128 slope. But the course is less demanding from other sets of tees and has long been a favorite of women and seniors. Burning Ridge’s biggest stars are its par-3s, most notably No. 12, which plays to 247 yards from the back tees with the green surrounded by water on three sides.
Playing conditions remain consistently solid, thanks in large part to an extensive renovation project in 2005 that included the installation of the TifEagle Bermuda putting surfaces and bunkers completely redone and filled with sparkling white sand. Holes are well framed by mature pines and mounded berms with target bunkers aiding on some of the tees. Water hazards come into play on several holes, especially on par-3s.
Hitting approaches into the correct portions of Burning Ridge’s greens is essential. Only a few of the approach targets are of the standard round or oval variety. Crafted through a Coastal pine forest with no significant elevation changes, Burning Ridge offers an interesting, but straight-forward set of holes with no hidden surprises.
