Azalea Sands2100 Hwy. 17 S., North Myrtle Beach, SC, 29582
Azalea Sands Golf Club exemplifies the early era of North Myrtle Beach golf. Well-maintained and enjoyable for the high handicapper, the course has remained a favorite of regular visitors and locals for more than 40 years. There’s nothing fancy about Azalea Sands, but there’s lots to like in a traditional resort layout that is popular for its high playability and value.
Designed by Gene Hamm, Azalea Sands provides a tranquil setting with no homes or accommodations along the fairways. The traditional style with only short distances between greens and tees, leads to quick pace of play and makes walking possible for most players. With a renovation in 2009, Azalea Sands has a vibrant look to go along with its old-school charm. The course still has plenty of teeth, too. Water comes into play on 15 holes and sand is strategically placed in the fairways and around the greens.
The course plays to 6,902 yards from the back tees with a rating of 72.5 and a 123 slope. Distances range from 6,287 to 5,148 yards from three other sets of tees. The signature hole at Azalea Sands is the par-5 18th, which stretches to 540 yards. Off the tee, water must be avoided to the left and sand to the right. The approach must carry water to the green. The par-3 eighth, 182 yards from the back markers, is a beautiful hole with a carry over water to the green. No. 11, a reachable par-5 featuring an approach over water, offers a heroic option, especially from the white tees.
