Indigo Creek Golf Club recently earned an overall rating of 6.8 from reviewers at Myrtle Beach Golf Insider, with typically higher ratings among the pro shop and staff. Formerly rated as one of Golf Digest’s “Top 10 Places to Play”, the Willard Byrd design takes advantage of the indigo and rice plantation it was built upon in 1990. The course doubles as a viewer’s paradise. Large creeks and oak and pine trees line the back nine. Throughout, players will find Tift Dwarf Bermuda greens, as well as Bermuda tees, fairways and roughs – not to mention plenty of wildlife.
The Lowcountry course stacked three of its best holes – Nos. 11, 12 and 14 – close by to put together one of the better stretches in the area. The green on the par-3 No. 11 is protected by a large bunker to the left and water to the front. After getting through that hole, it’s on to the 395-yard, par-4 No. 12. The dogleg left off the tee forces players to manipulate distance and touch. Go too short, and a tree line blocks your view of the green. Go too long, and large mounds and houses come into play. Two holes later, the 509-yard, par-5 No. 14 awaits. With a small pond jutting through the right side of the fairway, players must again choose their shots wisely. As for the rest of the round, waste bunkers, pot bunkers, more trees and elevated greens add to the experience.
The course underwent a mid-six-figure renovation project in Winter of 2012 that improved cart paths and bunkers, updated the clubhouse and removed approximately 800 trees. Golfers often pair rounds here with the nearby Indian Wells Golf Club, which is located just across U.S. 17 in Murrells Inlet.
